Hoosier Hill, Indiana’s Highpoint

Hoosier Hill Indiana Highpoint

The highest natural point in Indiana is Hoosier Hill, a pleasant, soft rise, ascending briefly from the surrounding, sweating corn, not visible from even a short distance. The most that can be said of it is that it represents the state best as a flat and remarkably unremarkable piece of technically important trivia.

If it was not a part of our goal to reach all 50 high points in the United States, we would never come here, and we will never return, because there is nothing here. A mailbox, bench, picnic table, and large rock fill in the emptiness of a clearing once occupied by oak and maple, in the small forested area surrounded by hundreds of square miles of corn fields broken only by the small country roads that divide the Indiana countryside into discernable chunks.

There is no hike, the woods are nearly small enough to see out the other side when standing outside of it, and the drive takes you far from any other interesting city, natural feature, or activity that does not involve livestock.

The highpoint, so called, is located on Elliot Rd, roughly a 20 minute drive north of Richmond, 1 hour from Dayton Ohio, and 1.5 hours from Indianapolis.
